Shine - supporting children & young people with additional needs and their families

Our Journey

Shine began with two parents who simply wanted a safe, understanding place for their children. Over the years, that small act of courage has grown into a thriving community of families, staff and supporters.

This timeline tells the story of how Shine became a space where children and young people with additional needs can grow, play and feel truly understood.

1989

A parent-led beginning

Two parents of children with Special Educational Needs created a small support group for families seeking advice, connection and reassurance.

Meetings were held in the old mobile Toy Library on Alpha Road — a modest space where friendships formed and families felt less alone.

Early 1990's

A growing partnership

The newly opened Newberry Child Development Centre provided a place to share information with even more families.

Relationships with specialist therapists and local agencies began to strengthen — partnerships that remain a vital part of Shine’s approach today.

Mid 1990's

Funding that changed everything

A £750 Local Health Authority start-up grant helped the small group become more structured and sustainable.

A subsequent three-year Lottery Grant enabled the organisation — then known as Contact — to create office space at the Toy Library and begin its first summer play scheme.

2000's

Growing demand

As more families discovered the service, demand increased.

Additional funding allowed the original Toy Library to be absorbed into Contact, and a permanent staff team was established to support the growing needs of local families.

2014

A new purpose-built home

With continued growth and community support, Shine opened its purpose-built building on Alpha Road — the same building we use today.

This modern space allowed for larger groups, more activities and greater support for children with a wide range of needs.

Today

Shine

The organisation was renamed Shine, reflecting our belief in every child’s potential. With the dedication of our staff team and nine Trustees, Shine continues its founding mission:

to support, include and empower children and young people with additional needs, and their families.

Looking ahead

Our story is still being written. As Shine continues to grow, our commitment remains the same: to create a place where every child feels safe, valued and able to flourish.

With the support of families, staff, Trustees and our community, we look forward to many more years of helping children and young people shine in their own unique way
